An omelet might seem like a simple breakfast. At GiGi’s Playhouse Sacramento, it can also be a lesson in reading, communication, independence, and leadership. And Jasmine, one of my guests in this episode, knows a thing or two about making them.
I’m joined by Missy Okelberry, Site Manager and Nicole Harrigan, Board President, along with Jasmine and her mother, Misha, to explore this Down syndrome achievement center in Roseville. GiGi’s offers free programs for individuals with Down syndrome from infancy through adulthood, creating opportunities to build skills and friendships throughout their lives.
We talk about literacy and math tutoring, fitness, cooking, and the importance of having a community where people feel welcomed and accepted. Misha shares how Jasmine’s confidence and social connections have grown, while Jasmine brings her own perspective as both a participant and a volunteer.
We also discuss what it takes to keep every program free, why restoring speech therapy is a priority, and the need for more opportunities for adults after they leave the school system.
Whether you’re looking for resources for your family or a meaningful way to volunteer and give back, there’s plenty to discover at GiGi’s Playhouse.
